Mold Prevention

Preventing & Addressing Mold in Residence Halls

Keep your dorm mold free! To help prevent the growth of mold in residence halls, it is essential that resident students do the following to prevent mold growth.

How To Prevent Mold

  • Report any leaks or moisture issues immediately to Housing Maintenance.
  • Keep HVAC drip pans clean, flowing freely, and unobstructed.
  • Vent dryers and moisture-generating appliances outside when feasible.
  • Aim to maintain indoor humidity between 30–60% (ideally below 60%).
  • Clean and dry any wet or damp spots within 48 hours.

  • Regular cleaning—especially of showers to remove soap scum—is essential.

  • Residents are responsible for cleaning their own bathrooms, including jack-and-jill setups. Soap and hot water or general cleaners are sufficient.

  • In Rogers and Gresham Halls, exterior bathroom walls tend to develop condensation and are prone to mold. These surfaces should be checked and cleaned frequently.
