The following 10 Tech Tips for Semester Prep will help you prepare for day one. We stand ready to provide the support you need to thrive in our evolving university environment. Thank you for being a part of our community. Together, let's make this semester one of innovation, discovery, and achievement!
1. Know how to get help.
To request technical support, start by contacting the IT Help Desk. You can submit an incident via phone, email, self-service, or in person. Incidents allow us to track the issue and ensure you get a spot in the queue.
2. Ensure your MIDAS password is up to date.
Sign into midas.odu.edu. If your password is set to expire soon, a message will appear upon signing in. More information on your MIDAS ID can be found here.
3. Confirm VPN access.
If you need to connect to campus VPN for remote access, ensure your access is up to date by signing into the GlobalProtect application on your laptop. More information on VPN access can be found here.
4. Review safe computing practices.
Ensure your digital safety by visiting °¿¶Ù±«â€™s Safe Computing Practices page. This resource offers vital guidelines to help you maintain secure systems and protect your data.
5. Turn on your office computer and run updates.
At least a week before the semester begins, turn on your office computer to allow it to catch up on any missed updates. You can manually run updates by taking the steps below.
For Windows devices:

Start > All > Dell Command Update > Check
For Apple devices:

App Store > Updates > Update All
6. Verify peripherals (headsets, webcams, printer, etc.).
Ensure you have all the tools you need to succeed by taking steps such as testing the audio and video connections on your device, checking that your printer has enough paper and toner, and confirming that all your peripherals are in working order.
7. Validate file access.
Verify that you are signed into OneDrive and the shared network drives you need are mapped on your device. More information on file storage can be found here.
8. Review classroom needs.
Visit the classrooms you will be using this semester to ensure your needs are met, especially software. More information on technology classrooms can be found here.
9. Check software.
Whether in a classroom or at your office desktop, sign in to see if all the software you need is installed. Also, try opening software on the computer to ensure it is functional. Note: Software requests must be submitted two weeks before your class starts.
10. Approach technical challenges with mindfulness.
In our university environment, where deadlines are tight, and technology is crucial to daily operations, it’s easy to feel frustrated when things don’t work as expected. Practicing mindfulness through those challenges can make a significant difference in resolving issues effectively and maintaining a positive working relationship between faculty, staff, and the IT department.
